Tuesday's CD
Wednesday, July 05, 2006
Because of the holiday, I actually bought this week's CD on Monday. The album is called Violet, the debut release from The Birthday Massacre. The genre is mostly gothic rock with some nice-sounding female vocals. It moves into Synth Pop territory for a few of the songs, which is kind of nice because you can tell the band doesn't take themselves too seriously. The female vocalist, Chibi, does some cool growling in one song and whispers a lot, which I think is neat. She seems like a good singer, and the plentiful reverb and other vox effects make her sound very haunting.

The style is basically your standard goth rock, with some nice electronic treatments and synths thrown in to accentuate the dark melodies. Many of the songs feature some fairly heavy black metal, ala Type O Negative. All-in-all, a good effort and worth picking up if you like Type O Negative, Tapping the Vein, Morrisey, The Cure, or (groan) Evanesence, etc. It's definitely an interesting departure from the standard Metropolis electronic fare.

A cool live video of "Lover's End." Looks like it would suck to be in that audience, but the lead singer seems nice (the Perky Goth returns!).
